A trip to Kassel during a shooting-break

Young people from Spain, Bulgaria, Italy and Germany - are welcomed in the townhall of Kassel by elderman Anita Mahrt yesterday - they have one thing in common - It is their interest in media. The young persons at the age of 16 to 18 are taking part in the first Youth-Media-Camp in Bad Emstal. Therefore they visited Kassel, the biggest city in the region of Nothern Hesse and - of course - they will go to know the Zissel as well (a local festival being celebrated every year in July).

"The young people will get to know more about media, they are producing spots concerning European themes and edit their self-made short films", says Jörg Ruckel from the Media-Project-Center Open Channel in Kassel. This Media-Project-Center has organized and financed the project "Youth for Europe", also supported by the EU with 17.000 Euro. A partner in this cooperation is the Jugendbildungswerk of Kassel (an institution for youth-education besides school). This institution had advertised the project in all schools of the countries taking part in this exchange. "The participants shall meet and get to know each other and they should be qualified watching, using and handling media in an independent way", says Jörg Ruckel.

When the Youth-Media-Camp with participants from Padova (Italy), Vidin (Bulgaria) and Barcelona (Spain) will end on the next wednesday the media-work will be given to the next group. "Young people from Poland, Finland and Portugal, who have already arrived in Germany, will continue the work of the first part of the Media-Camp", says Jörg Ruckel. And - of course - they will be welcomed by councilwoman Anita Mahrt again.

Jugendliche des Internationalen Mediencamps waren in Kassel zu Besuch

Eines haben die Jugendlichen aus Spanien, Bulgarien, Italien und Deutschland gemeinsam, die gestern von Stadträtin Anita Mahrt im Kasseler Rathaus begrüßt wurden: Es ist das Interesse für die Medien. Im Zuge des ersten Jugend-Medien-Camps, an dem die 30 Sechzehn- bis Achtzehnjährigen derzeit in Bad Emstal teilnehmen, besuchten sie die nordhessische Metropole und werden heute und morgen auch den Zissel kennen lernen. "Die Jugendlichen erwerben während dieses Camps Medienkompetenz, sie drehen Spots zu europäischen Themen und schneiden ihre selbst gedrehten Kurzfilme", sagt Jörg Ruckel vom Medienprojektzentrum Offener Kanal Kassel, das das von der EU mit 17.000 Euro bezuschusste Projekt "Jugend für Europa" organisiert und finanziert hat.

Partner bei der Zusammenarbeit ist das Kasseler Jugendbildungswerk, das das Projekt in den Schulen der Länder ausgerufen hatte. Die Jugendlichen sollen dabei einander begegnen und dazu qualifiziert werden, mit Medien und deren Inhalten eigenverantwortlich umzugehen, sagt Jörg Ruckel.

Wenn das Camp der Jugendlichen aus dem italienischen Padova, aus Vidin in Bulgarien und aus dem spanischen Barcelona am kommenden Mittwoch zu Ende geht, werden sie ihre Medienarbeit der nächsten Gruppe übergeben. "Polnische, finnische und portugiesische Jugendliche, die jetzt bereits hier sind, werden dann die Arbeiten im Camp weiterführen", sagt Jörg Ruckel. Auch sie wird Stadträtin Anita Mahrt wiederum im Kasseler Rathaus herzlich willkommen heißen.
